Cabrera to become president of George Mason University

Ángel Cabrera is to leave Thunderbird, the Arizona-based business school, in June 2012 to take up the top job at George Mason University, which has three campuses in Virginia. The university specialises in economics, law, sciences, engineering and humanities as well as business.
A native of Spain, Prof Cabrera, 44, joined Thunderbird nearly eight years from IE Business School in Madrid. During his tenure at Thunderbird, Prof Cabrera carried out considerable high-profile work with the World Economic Forum, the United Nations and the Clinton Global Initiative, and introduced an MBA oath long before other more high profile schools.
Chair of the Thunderbird Board of Trustees, Ann Iverson, commended Prof Cabrera for successfully leading the $65m capital campaign for the school.
Prof Cabrera will succeed Alan Merten, who was president of George Mason university for 15 years. “After eight wonderful years at Thunderbird, I am honoured to have been asked to lead one of the most innovative institutions in American higher education,” says Prof Cabrera. “I am humbled to follow in the footsteps of a great educator and leader, President Alan Merten, and I look forward to working with such a talented community of faculty and administrators.”
Prof Cabrera earned his PhD and masters degree from Georgia Institute of Technology, which he attended as a Fulbright Scholar, and a BS and MS in engineering from Madrid Polytechnical University, one of Spain’s premier engineering schools.
