Behind the Candelabra – DVD review

Michael Douglas and Matt Damon make a magnificent couple as the ageing Liberace and his young lover Scott Thorson

Steven Soderbergh, 2013

Entertainment One

Who knew that Michael Douglas and Matt Damon would make such a magnificent couple as the ageing Liberace and his young lover Scott Thorson?

In Steven Soderbergh’s sensitive and sparkling retelling of Thorson’s memoir, Douglas astonishes as the flamboyant showman – strutting his stuff on the Vegas stage, yet beneath all the flounces and furs (and indeed, hairpiece), a vulnerable, lonely man. Although more subtle, Damon’s performance as the blond, buff ingénue is equally remarkable. Slip into your hot tub, pop open the bubbly, and enjoy.
