A Late Quartet
Yaron Zilberman, 2013
Subtle drama about a string quartet whose unity is in jeopardy after 25 years together. Philip Seymour Hoffmann and Christopher Walken are the big names, but in this ensemble each performance is as strong as the others.
Personal roles echo instrumental parts: the perfectionism of the lead violinist overshadows the supporting role his second fiddle is obliged to assume – and leads to conflict; the sonorous wisdom of the cellist lends paternal support to the fragile vitality of the viola player. Worth watching for the music alone.
