Rock shares tumble after Darling pledge

Northern Rock shares plunged on Tuesday as investors appeared resigned to losing most of their money invested in the mortgage lender.

The steep fall follows a statement from the Newcastle-based bank on Monday which said the takeover proposals it had received were “materially” below Friday’s closing price of 132.6p.
