Defeated candidate threatens street protests in Peru

Ollanta Humala, the radical nationalist who narrowly lost Peru's presidential election last week, threatened yesterday to stage street protests against the incoming government of Alan García, which takes office on July 28.

"We will act as the opposition in the Congress and in the streets," Mr Humala said in a meeting with the international media. "If we have to take our opposition on to the streets, we will do so."
