The US and Europe are struggling to maintain a united front over the future of Kosovo after Russia effectively blocked them from passing a United Nations resolution on moving the province towards independence.
Last week, envoys from the European Union, the US and Russia formally began a 120-day process to consult Pristina and Belgrade on a possible compromise on Kosovo’s final status. But expectations are low and opinions differ among all three on what stance to take in the absence of a diplomatic breakthrough.
