Financial stocks hold back Wall Street

US stocks veered lower on Tuesday after spending most of the trading session in positive territory, dragged down by financial stocks despite positive profit surprises.

The S&P 500 index closed 0.9 per cent lower at 1,081.40. The S&P financials sub-index dropped 1.9 per cent.
