Brown hardens line on illegal strikes

Gordon Brown was set for the most serious confrontation with the unions of his premiership as the government on Monday hardened its line against the spreading wave of wildcat strikes over the use of overseas labour.

Contractors at two nuclear plants joined hundreds of workers in illegal walkouts at a dozen power stations. In spite of the strikes and the severe weather, energy supplies did not appear to be disrupted.
