Obituary: “I came too late”

The last public appearance of Zhao Ziyang, the former Chinese leader who died at the age of 85 on Sunday, was a visit to protesting students in Beijing’s Tiananmen Square shortly before dawn on May 19, 1989.

Mr Zhao, then head of China’s ruling Communist party, had lost a power struggle with government hardliners determined to crack down on pro-democracy demonstrations that had convulsed the capital.
