Crackdown on bogus mortgage rescues

The US government on Monday unveiled a multi-agency crackdown against fraudsters who prey on struggling homeowners with bogus loan modification and foreclosure rescue schemes.

Reports of suspected mortgage fraud have been on the rise in the wake of the housing slump, as scammers con borrowers seeking help from government programmes to avoid foreclosure and reduce monthly mortgage payments. The government is concerned that such scams will target its latest rescue programme to stabilise the housing market.
