No extra troops for Iraq, ministers promise

No extra troops will be sent to Iraq to replace the soldiers being redeployed to US-controlled sectors, ministers pledged on Tuesday as they sought to quell backbench anger over the plans.

The government tried to reassure its highly sceptical MPs that British troops will not get bogged down in Iraq on a semi-permanent basis, while refusing to reject the US request for military aid.
