Private equity's offshore route

Despite the huge inflow of foreign direct investment into China, investments by international venture capital and private equity firms have been relatively small when compared with similar deals in more developed countries in Asia.

Most private equity firms are still not comfortable making substantial investment directly into companies in mainland China, and any involvement is typically undertaken through vehicles set up in offshore jurisdictions such as the British Virgin Islands, Bermuda, Cayman Islands and Hong Kong.
