Europe’s fishing quota cuts fail to ease fears

The amount of fish taken from European waters will be cut substantially next year, but not by as much as scientists say is needed to preserve stocks.

European Union ministers are on the last day of their annual round of haggling over fish quotas, and are expected to reach agreement later on Thursday. The European Commission has proposed a 25 per cent cut in the quota of cod, one of the most important catches.
