The US bowed to pressure from Latin American countries on Wednesday and joined the 33 other members of the Organisation of American States in lifting the 47-year-old suspension of Cuba’s membership in the group.
US officials were quick to insist that the decision, which follows a Latin American campaign to end Havana’s isolation, still required Cuba to make democratic changes before rejoining. The final text, the product of much diplomatic haggling, says Cuba’s readmission would be in line with the ”practices, purposes and principles of the OAS.”
