Members of Eta fatally shot a Spanish civil guard and critically injured a second in France on Saturday in an opportunistic attack that has united Spain’s main political parties in condemnation of the violent Basque separatist group.

In a marked departure from the point-scoring and vitriol that has characterised the current legislature, parties representing the entire national congress signed a communiqué expressing their “full condemnation and rejection of this latest terrorist crime”.
