Brave opponent of S African apartheid

South Africa's Helen Suzman, who died yesterday at the age of 91, won an international reputation as a brave and tireless liberal opponent of apartheid.

During more than three decades as a member of parliament she was often the lone voice opposing the draconian legislation that embedded racial discrimination and transformed the country into a police state.
