The auction market: The hunting grounds

If current trends in the international auction market are anything to go by anyone looking for a sound place to put some money during the past five years could, it seems, have done a lot worse than to buy a well-chosen, pre-owned wristwatch.

Sought-after models in excellent condition from makers such as Patek Philippe, Rolex and Vacheron Constantin, continue to achieve ever-stronger prices at auction, and the spring series of sales saw Christie’s hammer down its most expensive watch ever when a 1930 Patek Philippe tourbillon realised £1,013,400.
