US manufacturing shows signs of life

Signs of a recovery in manufacturing suggested that the recession in the US might be abating, but other data on Wednesday provided a reminder that the country faced a slog of a recovery rather than a quick turnround.

The contraction in manufacturing slowed last month with several industries showing growth. However, while pending home sales were hopeful, construction spending continued to slide and the latest private sector payrolls report pointed to another jump in the unemployment rate.
