The appearance of metal barriers and cops in brightly coloured vests in midtown Manhattan has joined the browning leaves of Central Park as one of New York’s autumn perennials.

As the grumbling locals, struggling to get around the ring of steel being erected around the Sheraton hotel, know all too well, it is time for the annual feast of charitable giving, business networking and back-slapping known as the Clinton Global Initiative.
