Why Blair faces Thatcher’s torment

There comes a moment when the most powerful of leaders lose control of their destiny. That happened this week to Tony Blair. A backbench rebellion against the UK prime minister turned into a Downing Street coup. Gordon Brown, the chancellor of the exchequer and heir presumptive, decided the moment had come to seize the crown. Mr Blair may yet just hang on until May next year, the 10th anniversary of his premiership. I would be surprised.
