Rallies help Royal and Sarkozy recover

The two leading contenders in France’s presidential race this weekend sought to recover from a difficult week with rallies on opposite sides of Paris drawing thousands in enthusiastic support.

For Ségolène Royal, Sunday’s meeting of more than 4,000 locally elected officials brought the opportunity to re-establish her Socialist credentials after alienating some members by saying she refused to be constrained by the party platform.
