Brown 'must be held responsible' if promises on red tape are broken

The British Chambers of Commerce targeted Gordon Brown over red tape yesterday, warning it would hold the chancellor personally responsible if the government's latest deregulatory promises were not fulfilled.

Alan Johnson, the trade and industry secretary, hit back by suggesting business was not doing enough to support the deregulatory drive, with companies supplying too few ideas for potential red tape cuts.
