Emerging markets bear brunt of sell-off

Global financial markets suffered one of their most turbulent weeks of recent years.

Emerging market equities endured their worst losing streak since the 1998 Russian debt crisis. The selling pressure hit its peak on Monday when trading was halted temporarily in India after Mumbai's benchmark index crashed 10 per cent in a matter of hours.
