Alitalia lurched nearer bankruptcy Friday after Silvio Berlusconi, Italy’s opposition leader, said he would block an Air France-KLM takeover bid if elected prime minister next month.

His pledge came in spite of government warnings that the loss-making airline was weeks away from running out of cash.
