When 2.8m Muslim pilgrims to Mecca reached the final stages of the annual haj this year, the symbolism of the moment when they crossed a bridge near the holy city and threw stones at what are called the “three Jamarats” took on greater significance than usuaI.
Unlike in previous years, when the rush of the crowds often led to deaths, this time they were being watched. Discreetly placed were 32 cameras - the centrepiece of an elaborate new security arrangement.
