Beijing in activist clampdown ahead of talks

Several Chinese activists have been placed under house arrest or under heavy police supervision over the last three days at the same time as officials from China and the US met to hold a dialogue on human rights.

The meeting, which took place in Beijing on Monday, was the first time the two countries had held the human rights dialogue in six years after a previous formal engagement on the subject was abandoned.
