EU backs restricted chemical testing law

The European Parliament on Thursday backed a controversial law that will force industry to register and test thousands of potentially harmful chemicals – but only after the business lobby won important concessions that will substantially reduce the regulatory burden imposed by the new regime.

The proposal known as Reach (for registration, evaluation and authorisation of chemicals) is one of the most bitterly contested pieces of recent European Union legislation.
