HBOS’s past grandees should stay in the past

It takes self-confidence bordering on arrogance to claim you are personally capable of reviving an ailing bank during the worst financial crisis for a century.

Yet that is what Sir George Mathewson and Sir Peter Burt have done in proposing to oust management of HBOS, take the top jobs themselves and lead the bank away from its state-sponsored suitor Lloyds TSB.
