More than one in four borrowers is worried about how to pay bills as fears mount about the growing £1,500bn ($2.3bn) personal debt mountain.

About 16 per cent of people are struggling to pay off debts, according to an annual “precious plastic” report conducted by YouGov for PwC, the professional services firm, with 27 per cent of those surveyed concerned about their ability to pay.
