Wal-Mart stands out amid retail misery

Wal-Mart on Thursday reported a 2.4 per cent rise in December sales, beating analysts’ expectations of a rise of 2.1 per cent, amid otherwise predominantly bleak sales figures from other leading retailers.

The largest US retailer said comparable store sales during the five-week December period were driven by strengths in grocery, pharmacy and electronics.
