Philippine president apologises for phone call 'lapse'

Gloria Macapagal Arroyo, president of the Philippines, yesterday apologised for talking to an election official shortly after the May 2004 presidential polls, breaking three weeks of silence on an issue that has triggered what analysts have called her administration's worst political crisis.

The controversy has led to calls for her to resign, revived fears of military coups and dragged down share prices and the local currency.
