Byron Wien, Morgan Stanley’s former investment strategist, is leaving Pequot Capital Management and joining Blackstone Group in a move that underscores how rapidly private equity companies are remaking themselves into more diverse financial companies.

Mr Wien, who will have the title of vice-chairman of Blackstone’s advisory business, will produce a newsletter and be available to brief clients. He will also give the group his views on macro trends to inform investment decisions. Mr Wien was best known while at Morgan Stanley, where he spent 20 years and which he left in 2005, for the forecasts he made each December of 10 possible surprises in the following year.
