As the chief executives of Procter & Gamble and Gillette today start explaining their bold merger bid to their combined 140,000 employees, observers wonder whether the takeover is as much a defensive move as it is an attack on the dominance of big retailers.
While going some way towards levelling the balance of power with giants such as Wal-Mart, Friday's mega-deal will not strip supermarket buyers of their pricing power overnight.
