Treasury challenges cost of revamped retirement proposals

The Treasury continued to question the affordability of the Pensions Commission's plan to revamp the state pension system yesterday as Lord Turner acknowledged that spending on pensions had to be set against other government priorities.

"The issue that is still to be resolved is affordability," said Gordon Brown, the chancellor.
