The BBC and C4 must raise spending on content

Amid the brouhaha over the next chairman of Channel 4 (now resolved) and the level of BBC salaries (now frozen) there has been depressingly little debate about why the two matter.

They matter because we want them to make programmes. And as our political parties work themselves up into a pre-election lather about public service broadcasting they have managed to miss the most important issue: Britain’s investment in original television content is plummeting.
