Brick Lane presents a calm face but fears for the future

The difference between the September 11 attacks and this week's terrorist strike against London was obvious as soon as one walked up Brick Lane.

The day after September 11, and for weeks later, the people of New York lived with the smell of smouldering rubble - and burning bodies - from the World Trade Center. It clung to your clothes as you hung them up at night.
