Tony Blair should step aside sooner rather than later, according to a significant number of Labour backbenchers who said the prime minister's authority was now much weakened.

Several MPs contacted on Friday said Mr Blair should carry the responsibility for the rparty's problems over Iraq and its return to power with a much smaller majority.
