Gordon Brown and Nicolas Sarkozy will turn up the heat on Angela Merkel, the German chancellor, when they renew calls for coordinated economic stimulus packages across the European Union at a summit in London on Monday.

The British prime minister will discuss the economic crisis and government support measures with the French president and with José Manuel Barroso, the European Commission president, and business and leading economists. Ms Merkel was not invited.
