Australian consumer mood at 19-month high

Australian consumer confidence surged to its highest level in 19 months in July, adding to signs the economy may have skirted recession.

The Westpac-Melbourne Institute index of consumer sentiment jumped 9.3 per cent in July to 109.4 points, seasonally adjusted, from 100.1 points in June, according to figures realeased on Wednesday.
