US and Iraq sign troop withdrawal pact

The US and Iraq on Monday signed a landmark security pact that paves the way for Barack Obama, the president-elect, to follow through on his campaign promise to end the Iraq war.

Ryan Crocker, the US ambassador to Baghdad, and Hoshyar Zebari, the Iraqi foreign minister, signed the agreement at the end of a year of tortured negotiations to replace the United Nations mandate that allows US troops to operate in the country.
