WASHINGTON URGED TO COME CLEAN ON 'SECRET PRISONS'

Angela Merkel, the German chancellor, yesterday added her voice to calls for the US to come clean about "secret prisons" allegedly maintained in Europe by the Central Intelligence Agency, Daniel Dombey reports from Brussels.

The US has yet to deny claims by the Washington Post newspaper that the CIA has operated a string of covert detention facilities, though it insists it has always obeyed international law.
