John McCain accepted the Republican presidential nomination on Thursday night by seeking to wrest the mantle of change from Barack Obama in a speech that mixed appeals to patriotism, criticism of Washington and a promise to work with political foes.
Mr McCain struck a more inclusive tone than did many of the other speakers at the Republican Convention in St Paul, who concentrated their fire on Mr Obama, the Democratic nominee. Nevertheless he let loose a blistering attack on the US federal government.
