The box office and home video success of Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa and the recent release of Monsters vs Aliens scored DreamWorks Animation its best first quarter performance as profits more than doubled.

With the company betting that 3-D cinema will be a cornerstone of its business in the future, it was the release of a film on conventional screens that proved the most lucrative in the quarter.
