John Dixon, head of Marks and Spencer’s food division, was on Wednesday appointed to the retailer’s board, fuelling speculation he is edging ahead of other internal candidates in the race to succeed Sir Stuart Rose as chief executive.

M&S said Mr Dixon would be appointed as executive director of food with immediate effect.
