Indonesia’s former central bank governor was convicted on Wednesday of bribing parliamentarians to pass legislation in one of the country’s most high-profile corruption cases in years.

Burhanuddin Abdullah, whose term ended in May, was jailed for five years and fined Rp250m rupiah ($23,500, €18,160, £14,140) for authorising the transfer of about $10m in a Bank Indonesia foundation account to lawmakers. After the verdict, the state anti-corruption commission (KPK), which prosecuted the case, named as official suspects three of Mr Burhanuddin’s deputies at the time of the illegal payments in 2003 for allegedly participating in the bribery decision.
