Madeira is barely a speck on the map of world golf. Yet the tiny rugged main island has two championship courses and there are 27 more holes on the even smaller island of Porto Santo.

It appears something of a mystery as to why anyone would attempt to build any kind of course on such mountainous terrain – until you consider the British connection.
