Move to regulate genetic tests sold to public

The government’s adviser on genetics will on Tuesday call for tough new standards to control the sale of genetic tests to the public, while refusing to condemn them outright.

Children and adults unable to provide “informed consent” should not normally use such “direct-to-consumer” tests at all, while companies offering them for hereditary disorders should provide counselling before and afterwards, the Human Genetics Commission argues in a set of draft principles for the industry.
