Eli Lilly to cut 5,500 jobs by 2011

Eli Lilly plans to cut 5,500 jobs, nearly 14 per cent of its workforce, by the end of 2011 as part of a restructuring by the drugs group to cut annual costs by $1bn.

The plan signals fresh action by large pharmaceuticals companies in the face of intensifying pressure for lower prices and as they struggle to replace expiring patents with innovative new medicines.
