Schröder seeks 'grand coalition' as CDU closes ranks behind Merkel

Gerhard Schröder, the German chancellor, yesterday backed a "grand coalition" as the sole realistic outcome of the inconclusive general election that has left Germany locked in a political stalemate.

"I want this coalition to happen," he told the state-owned ARD television network, in his clearest endorsement of a joint cabinet made up of his Social Democratic party and the opposition Christian Democratic Union.
