Minister hints at employee ownership

The government has sig-nalled its potential support for a John Lewis-style partial privatisation of the Royal Mail, transferring ownership of the postal operator from the state to staff.

Alan Johnson, the trade and industry secretary, argued yesterday that plans floated in the press by the Royal Mail to transfer a majority stake to its employees would not break Labour's commitment to keep the company "publicly owned".
